Unimpregnated activated carbons adsorb pollutants much faster than impregnated, as physical adsorption is much faster than the chemical sorption of the impregnated activated carbon. On the other hand, the pollutants in the unimpregnated activated carbons are less firmly bound and also can be desorbed when heated or when relative humidity increases. This is a disadvantage of pure activated carbons in long term applications.
When used in filtering cartridges, there always should be a particle filter behind the activated carbon to filter out dust particles liberated by the carbon.
Activated carbon from coconut shells is characterized by particularly fine pores. Coconut shells are therefore among the finest base materials for activated carbon.
